1 Samuel 2:2-3
“There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God. Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.” Oftentimes, we only compare ourselves horizontally. “Oh, compared to her…I’m a great Christian.” “Have you seen her lately? She needs our prayers.” We want the opportunity to puff ourselves up by finding people we deem to be less than us. It makes us feel holy and honest when we pick and choose who we compare ourselves with. The truth is, that type of comparison is always biased in hopes of fulfilling an agenda. Boasting may lift us for a moment, only to deflate us later when the truth comes out. Hannah’s prayer of rejoicing is a reminder of how we should judge ourselves. We must use a vertical scale of comparison. 1 Samuel 2:3 “Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.” There is only One by Whom we are to weigh our actions. There is no one like Him. Put whatever you want or desire on the scales, and He will win every time. There can be no balance when we weigh our actions to Him. When we compare ourselves only to Him, we have no chance to talk proudly. If we truly want to be lifted, we must first bow before Him. James 4:10 “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” Bible Reading: Ecclesiastes 7-8 | Revelation 9
