Proverbs 22:16
“He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want.” The world around us encourages selfish behavior. We are taught to put ourselves first, implying our needs are more important than those around us; yet, the Word of God speaks of a different way of life. Philippians 2:3-4 “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.” Selfishness only leads to wanting more. Instead of considering how everything will affect us, we can choose to live by faith and follow the Lord as He leads us. Doing so will allow us the opportunity to watch Him fulfill our needs time and time again just as He promised. Matthew 6:31-34 “Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” Jesus Christ left us an example of how to live selfless instead selfish. Philippians 2:5-8 “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Through His strength, follow His example today: Put His reputation above your own. Serve selflessly like He did. Humble yourself before Him. Seek to obey until the end. By following Christ’s example, we can turn from selfishness to selflessness.
