James 4:10
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” Humility is not thinking less of ourselves, but thinking of ourselves less. We often get this backwards. When we intentionally think less of ourselves and call ourselves humble, we are sadly mistaken. To call ourselves humble is very prideful indeed. James 4:6 “But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5-7 “Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” The first mention of the word “humble” is found in Exodus. Just as God had given these words for Moses and Aaron to speak unto Pharoah that day, He also gave them to Moses to pin down for us today. Exodus 10:3 “And Moses and Aaron came in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord God of the Hebrews, How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? let my people go, that they may serve me.” How long will it take us to humble ourselves before a thrice-holy God? If we want God to dwell with us, we must humble ourselves. Isaiah 57:15 If we want to be exalted, we must humble ourselves. Matthew 23:12 If we want to receive more grace, we must humble ourselves. James 4:6 If we want to be more like Jesus, we must humble ourselves. Philippians 2:8 Bible Reading: Jeremiah 5-6 | John 13 | Psalm 78
