Luke 2:7
“And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.” She. She gave birth to Jesus. She was whom the Lord chose to use to bring the Word into the world. John 1:14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” She wrapped Him in swaddling clothes. They were grave clothes, which signified His purpose. Luke 2:11 “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” She laid Him in a manger, because they found no room in the inn. Regardless of whether or not there is room made for Him, the Lord will carry out His purpose. Think of everything that innkeeper missed out on because he rejected Joseph and Mary that night. She was visited by the shepherds that were told of the birth of Jesus by the angel of the Lord. Luke 2:17 “And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.” While they made Him known, she pondered all that God had done through her. Luke 2:19 “But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.” Mary the Mother of Jesus also serves as an example of the great things that are possible through us if we will simply yield ourselves to the Lord. Luke 2:6
“And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.” She. She had carried Jesus in her womb for the required time. Prophecy had been declared that Christ would be born in Bethlehem. Micah 5:2 “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” She and Joseph were in Galilee, in the city of Nazareth. Caesar Augustus made a decree that all were required to pay taxes. Luke 2:1 “And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.” Because he was of the lineage of David, this required Joseph to return to Bethlehem. Luke 2:4-5 “And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.” Mary the Mother of Jesus also serves as an example of how Christ will guide our steps to exactly when and where He desires us to be. “Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.” She. She gave birth to a son. Luke 1:58 “And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.” She was the mother of John the Baptist. Luke 1:59-60 “And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.” She saw that there was something different about her son. Luke 1:66 “And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.” His father, Zacharias, was filled with the Holy Ghost and proclaimed that their child had a specific purpose. Luke 1:76 “And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;” Matthew 3:1-2 “In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” She would raise the voice in the wilderness. Matthew 3:3 “For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.” She raised him to have boldness. Matthew 3:7 “But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?” She raised him to point others to Christ. Matthew 3:11-12 “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” John 1:29 “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” John 3:30 “He must increase, but I must decrease.” Elisabeth also serves as an example that sometimes our greatest ministry is in not what we do, but who we raise. “And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.” She. She believed. Luke 1:38 “And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.” She was willing. Her willingness was birthed in faith that if the Lord said it, there is no doubt it would happen. Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” She believed and God performed. Philippians 1:6 “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” Mary the Mother of Jesus also serves as an example that when we believe what the Lord has promised, He is certain to perform it. Many of our prayers appear to go unanswered simply because we do not believe that God is willing and able to bring it to pass. Cast out the doubt today, and choose to believe that God is Able. Psalm 37:4-5 “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.” Bible Reading: Hosea 1-2 | Hebrews 9 | Psalm 117-118 Luke 1:36
“And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.” She. She was the cousin of Mary the Mother of Jesus. Her cousin conceived as a virgin. She conceived in her old age. Luke 1:37 “For with God nothing shall be impossible.” She also was with child when Mary came to visit her. Luke 1:41-42 “And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.” She was overwhelmed that the mother of Jesus was in her house. Luke 1:43 “And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” She heard Mary and the babe leaped with joy that Jesus was near. Luke 1:44 “For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.” She was humble. She was filled with the Holy Spirit. Elisabeth serves as an example of how the presence of the Lord brings joy to those around Him. Bible Reading: Daniel 11-12 | Hebrews 8 | Psalm 115-116 Luke 1:29
“And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.” She. She was visited by the angel Gabriel. Luke 1:26-27 “And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.” She was engaged to marry Joseph, a carpenter. She was highly favoured. Luke 1:28 “And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.” She was blessed. She found favour with God. She had no need to fear. Luke 1:30 “And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.” Mary the Mother of Jesus also serves as an example that when we are troubled we have no need to fear. “And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.” She. She was the first to see Jesus after He had risen. Mark 16:9 “Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.” She saw two angels inside the tomb where He had lain. John 20:12-13 “And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.” Then she turned and saw Someone else. John 20:14 “And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.” She pleaded with the Man to tell her where He was. John 20:15 “Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.” He said her name, and she knew immediately it was Him. John 20:16 “Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.” He told her to go and tell the others. John 20:17 “Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.” She obeyed Him. She went to tell the disciples that He was alive, but they did not believe her. Mark 16:11 “And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.” Mary Magdalene serves as an example of how we should obey Christ by telling others about Him. “And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.” She. She was one of the maids by the fire. Peter was there. Up above the fire, Jesus stood before the High Priest. Mark 14:66 “And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:” She had seen Peter before. “she looked upon him” She recognized him. “And thou wast with Jesus of Nazareth” She was the first of the three that heard Peter deny Christ. Mark 14:68 “But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.” She must have heard the cock crow. Mark 14:72 “And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.” The Maid By The Fire serves as an example of how people are watching our testimony. Would others be able to say that we have been with Jesus? “Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.” She. She did what she could, and her sacrifice is still remembered today. Jesus promised. The same promise is also found in Matthew. Matthew 26:13 “Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.” She gave to Jesus. She honored Him above all else. She realized that He was about to give His life for the sins of the whole world. Matthew 26:12 “For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.” He did not forget her service to Him. He remembered her, and promised that many others would remember her too. Mary of Bethany also serves as an example that God remembers those who sacrifice for Him. When we give to the Lord…He remembers. Bible Reading: Daniel 3-4 | Hebrews 4 | Psalm 107-108 Mark 14:8
“She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.” She. She had something to give. Matthew 26:7 “There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.” While others criticized, Jesus called what she did a good work. Matthew 26:10 “When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.” She simply did what she could for Christ. Should this not be our prayer for our own lives? Oh that we would just do what we can for Him! Mary of Bethany also serves as an example that God only desires us to do what we can so that He can do what we cannot. We all have something to give. Our time. Our talents. Our service. When we give whatever we have to Him, we allow Him to work through us. Bible Reading: Daniel 1-2 | Hebrews 3 | Psalm 105-106 |
